Who We are
MR ENZO FALCONE: CHAIRMAN AND FOUNDER
... We should all feel responsible for all that we are not doing to alleviate suffering in the world. Our responsibility is also remaining passive or silent in front of injustice, inequality, and other people’s suffering.
The Third World is not really a place so far away geographically from us; it’s near us..
We breathe it every day, we cross it every moment when injustice and selfishness obstruct other people’s dignity.
To be responsible means to feel on oneself the weight of a moral imperative; to witness with actions and words our humanity, to participate making the world a healthier place, a more human place for all regardless of the colour of your skin, your religion, and of whether you are a man or a woman.
Everyone of us can help make the difference, everyone of us must realize that he has the power to do this for himself and for others….. (Enzo Falcone).
Enzo Falcone, a doctor from Milan, has been a "doctor without frontier" and has operated in many states in Africa and Asia. Subsequently he settled in Vietnam, where he founded Care the People with some friends, leading off projects and structures for infants. Now he is the Chairman of the association.
HOW DID YOU CHOSE TO FOUND CARE THE PEOPLE?
I have seen so much suffering in the years I have been in Africa and in Asia, that by now I should be able to face it without difficulty. But that is not so: I just can’t get used to it. Every time I see the suffering of a child, of someone hungry or ill, of a beggar or a prostitute, it seems to be my own suffering.
It is as if I felt this same suffering on myself. What is worse is that I feel as if I can do so little to help these people or as if I am not doing enough. We should all feel responsible for not trying to help reduce suffering in the world. We are blameful not only if we are not ethically correct ourselves, if we do not respect the values that are the legacy of all men regardless of the times and the States, but also if we remain silent in front of other people’s suffering.
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO DEDICATE YOURSELF TO THE THIRD WORLD?
The Third World is a place that is only geographically distant from us, but actually it is near us. We breathe it every day, we go through it every time injustice and selfishness wound other people’s dignity. My experience as a doctor in Africa has opened me horizons that I would have surely lost if I had not gone away.
I received the greatest gift living there: its people, its rivers and its forests have talked to me. I learnt there what friendship, sacrifice, love, honesty, coherence and the important things are and not only in words.
And more than all, equality. We all desire the same things: work, love, peace, a good future for us and for our children. And we suffer for the same things. Each one of us can help make the difference; we must all must realize that we can do this for ourselves and the others.
There are many of us who have chosen to line up with all those who are being humiliated and offended by the arrogance and the violence of our opulence. We have given out contribute by founding Care the People, a small ungainful organization useful to the society.
HAVE YOU EVER HAD SECOND THOUGHTS ?
"I must say thank you to my father who was the first person to support me when, 20 years ago, a went away in Africa. I was a young doctor then and I was rather afraid of facing this large experience. At the time, I was still thinking about my carrier and I was looking forward to having success in work and an easy life.
No, I have never had second thoughts because, luckily, at my side, I have always had people who have supported and encouraged me. But the thing that really grieves me is to see that many people who could really take part in a life project…. are afraid of taking up such a responsibility……
Today, I’m more afraid of people’s powerlessness that of violence……We can really change the world… and it’s not a dream nor the words of a visionary…. We all must learn and begin to do our duty; we must learn not to feel impotent… and to pursue our secret dreams”
